A három pont (a ... írásjel) angol neve three dots
vagy (ritkábban) ellipsis.
(1) Használatos idézett szövegben egy vagy több
kihagyott szó jelölésére (esetleg zárójelben).
Az alábbi idézetből pl. a "The hand more
instrumental to the mouth" sor maradt ki:
"The head is not more native to the heart (...)
than is the throne of Denmark to thy father"(Shakespeare)

Az akadozó beszédet, a párbeszéd közbeni befejezetlen mondatot jelölheti;
szerepe lehet az is, hogy jelölje, ha sejtetni akarunk valamit:
I'd like to... that is... well... if you don't mind...

at l a.m.? Well, I wonder...
