A be afraid többféle szerkezetben áll, és jelentése ettől függően többféle lehet:
(1) 'nem mer'
to-igenévvel: She's afraid
to go up the ladder
A 'mer' angolul leggyakrabban be not afraid
to; ezt használjuk inkább, mint a dare igét:

(4) Az I'm afraid gyakori szólásforma, jelentése 'sajnos...'
(főként olyan helyzetekben, mikor mondandónk a partnerünk számára
kedvezőtlen):
I'm afraid there's no other train to Brighton, sir
(Típushiba mindig 'Attól tartok...'-nak, 'Attól félek...'-nek fordítani.)

melléknév nemcsak a be-vel, hanem a seem, look, appear igékkel is
állhat együtt:
